The Power of Presence
Often times when we listen to a video or watch a presentation given by one of our favorite motivational speakers, we walk away from the experience having acquired a good deal of knowledge and encouragement applicable to our lives. Yet as powerful as some of these videos and presentations may be, their impact does not compare to that which is felt after having been in the physical presence of those whose words and advice matter so much to us. It is one thing to listen to an audio book by Richard Branson, or watch Peter Guber being interviewed on YouTube. It is an entirely different experience to sit within feet of someone such as Donn Mann, a former Navy SEAL Team Leader, and feel the power with which he shares his story. Though we may not know the speaker personally, there is a personal connection that takes place and becomes ingrained in our psyche.
We remember the speaker’s words because we saw the passion in his eyes or the sincerity in her smile. At Executive Speakers Bureau we understand just how powerful face-to-face interactions are. It is partly why we go to such lengths to ensure our clients are matched with speakers whose words leave an imprint on the lives of those at the receiving end of their presentations. It is also why we, as a company, have dedicated ourselves to being of service to others by not just giving back but by being present as we give.
This week our team volunteered at Samaritan’s Feet, an event at which children’s feet are washed and they are then given a new pair of socks and shoes. The organization was founded in 2003 by Manny Ohonme and his wife, Tracie, and to date they have distributed more than four million pairs of shoes. As we interacted with the children we learned about their hopes and dreams. We laughed with some of them as they told funny stories while having their feet washed and trying on their new shoes. We gained a deeper understanding of how meaningful it is to put a face to a name, to meet the person behind the cause. The emotions we felt in seeing the smiles on their faces and the pride in their eyes would not have carried the same weight had we simply made a donation online. Though we’d like to believe that our actions had a great impact on their lives, the truth is they had a great impact on ours.
It is an understanding of this strength in human connection, in personal interaction, that will continue to drive us here at Executive Speakers Bureau in securing the very best motivational speakers for our clients, thus creating the opportunity for impact that lasts a lifetime.
